It's with a lot of sadness that I report about the ongoing Yahoo layoffs that have begun occurring yesterday. Danny has aggregated the news stories and headlines, and we're even seeing a Facebook group called "I worked at Yahoo until today" that has some familiar faces. At Search Engine Roundtable, we're really sad to see this happen. A couple weeks ago we reported seeing that Google.com's Country Specific Weights Getting Stronger. But some are seriously complaining about how much it has impacted them in the US search results at Google.com. The original WebmasterWorld thread is now 54 messages long and more and more threads have been popping up. A new thread at WebmasterWorld asks if this new algorithm change is only impacting US based legal sites. If you're receiving any Google email that you need to link you Google Analytics account with your Google AdWords account, the email appears to be legit. Google Help clarifies as it explains the process of linking your Google Analytics account to your AdWords account. The email states: Hello, It's come to our attention that your AdWords account has not been properly linked with your Google Analytics account. Yesterday, Hitwise released a report about what happens when your site gets banned from Google's index. Using charts and graphs, Hitwise illustrates how the market share of searches declined due to the company's blacklisting, and how the competition moved up. Are you surprised? I'm not. But this is a true illustration of what can (and does) happen when your site, which ranked #1, goes down and another site takes over. A Search Engine Watch Forums thread reports that Google Analytics Evangelist Avinash Kaushik spoke with webmasters last week and reported that, for the first time, the average number of keywords per query has gone from 3 to 4 words per query. It looks like people are searching for the long tail, which is great for those who are optimizing for it.
