Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.
Search Engine Roundtable Stories:
- '08 Election Day Logos From Google, Live.com, Ask.com, DogPile & Us
Today is election day in the United States of America, if you haven't noticed. To note the day, several major search related sites, including us, have posted special logos, themes and content. Note, Yahoo does not have a special logo for the day, but they have a rocking political dashboard to keep tab on your next president. Here is a run down of logos and themes: Google: DogPile: Microsoft's Live.com: Ask.com: Search Engine Roundtable: Go - Webmasters Report November 2008 Google SERP Changes
After Google's SERP update over the weekend caused fear (and after Matt Cutts acknowledged that it was a bug), webmasters are calming down and our regularly-scheduled programming (the monthly SERP report) has returned. One webmaster notes that he used to be on top of the SERPs for regional and worldwide searches (on the "web," that is), and now he's only on top of the regional SERPs. Another forum member thinks that Google is still cleaning - Learn Search Engine Optimization by Doing, Not by Reading
Lisa Barone writes a great piece at the We Build Pages blog about how you'll become a good SEO by actually doing SEO, not by reading SEO strategy on all those blogs you subscribe to. It's simply not good enough to know. You need to test, retest, and verify your changes. Blogging is only part of it, but it's not the whole picture. I know way too many people who have read a book on - Google Hires New Blood for the Webmaster Team
In a Google Groups thread, a few new bodies have joined the ranks to post on behalf of Google, as John Honeck points out. They are: * dLux, who hails from Switzerland in the Search Quality Team * oliverf, who represents Google's Montreal office and focuses on Google's anti-malware efforts * Christopher W, who is apparently from San Francisco an is also on the Search Quality Team * Adi Goradia, who represents Google's Search Quality - Yahoo Raising Minimum Bids for Search Ads?
We have recently wrote about Yahoo Charging More & Giving Less. But it seems like a new wave of spikes in minimum bids have been surging through Yahoo Search Marketing campaigns. A WebmasterWorld thread has a few advertisers complaining that Yahoo has increased their minimum bids again. Some advertisers are so tired of the increases in costs that they are dropping all or half of their budgets with Yahoo and moving it elsewhere. I also - Tell Google Your Images Are Not Adult Natured
We have been covering the topic of your images getting stuck in Google's image filter for a while now. But what if you followed our suggestions and still, you are stuck in the SafeSearch filter. What do you do? Well, it seems like a Googler is actively reporting this specific issues to the image search team. The thread, I would submit my issues to, is at Google Groups. Googler, Susan Moskwa, seems to have sent - Google Ads Pushing Political Voting Agenda on My Site
There are two very long threads in the search forums talking about how Google's AdSense ads are showing political ads on their sites. A WebmasterWorld thread and a Google Help Forum thread has discussion on why these ads are showing up. In summary, there are thousands of publishers out there that put Google AdSense ads on their sites. Typically, the ads shown are relevant to the content of their site. But with all the politics - Google Slowly Dropping PageRank From The Toolbar?
A WebmasterWorld thread has discussion around how Google seems to not be promoting the PageRank indicator on the latest version of their toolbar. In fact, no longer is Google showing the PageRank score in the marketing image used on the Toolbar page. Plus, it seems like Google is making it harder for users to turn on the PageRank indicator within the toolbar itself. Does this surprise anyone? Well, we know a few things. We know
