Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Google Gives Some AdSense Publishers More Channels (500 Total)
Jennifer Slegg reported that Google AdSense has increased the number of channels for AdSense publishers by an addition 300, adding up to a total of 500 channels. Channels give publishers a way to segment their ads and track them for performance and earning objectives. The thing is, the discussion at WebmasterWorld seems to think that this is a thing given to publishers on a publisher by publisher basis. For some reason, many are reporting only
  • How Might Search Engines Detect Paid Links
David Harry wrote a technical piece named Hunting for paid links; a technical review. In that piece, he goes through some of the ways a search engine may detect paid links. As many of you know, the topic of buying links has been somewhat controversial over the past couple years. There is no doubt in my mind, that Google has become very clever at detecting these links and devaluing many of them. So, as an
  • Google Maps Print Button Stops Working For Many
Let's add this to the list of Google bugs we have been reporting about in the past week or so. A Google Maps Help thread has confirmed reports from Google that their "print" button on Google Maps is not working for all users. First reports came in in late January and yet it still seems not to be fixed. On February 5th, a Google Employee, Alvin, confirmed the issue reported by a user: I heard
  • Should Google Search Suggestions Show Adult Suggestions?
A Google Web Search Help thread has an annoyed searcher who is upset Google's search box offers search suggestions for "youpron" when you type in the word "you." The easy solution is to turn off search suggestions in your search preferences: But you cannot turn off search suggestions on every computer your child has access to. So the big question is, should Google's search suggestions have a strong adult filter that disallows adult oriented suggestions
  • Google AdWords Bug Automatically Turns On Automatic Matching
Disgruntled Google AdWords advertisers noticed a few days ago that Google automatically turned on "automatic matching" on their campaigns. The first reports seem to have come in at WebmasterWorld on Thursday. Here is one post showing their distaste for such a finding: I just noticed Automatic matching total/Enabled/no clicks or impressions at the bottom of my keyword stats and I am not happy. It turned out to be a bug that Google fixed a couple
  • Google Adsense Preview Tool Goes Offline For Few Days
The Google Adsense Preview Tool has been bugging out for the past few days, only returning to normal just a day or so ago. First reports came from Google AdSense Help forums on Thursday, February 5th. Google noticed the complaints on the 6th, and a Google representative said: Thanks for bringing up the issue and sorry for the trouble. We've noticed the issue and are working on it. We'll inform you as soon as it
