Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.
Search Engine Roundtable Stories:
- Google Celebrates Their 12th Birthday
Today is Google's 12th Birthday. They have a special Google Doodle or logo made by Wayne Thiebaud, a well known painter known for painting cakes. Thiebaud was born on November 15, 1920, in less than 2 months he turns 90. Here is a picture of Google's 12th birthday logo: You can see Google's past birthday logos for their 11th birthday, the 10th also, 9th, 8th, the 7th and 6th. The 7th and 6th were celebrated - Google Sues Rogue Drug Companies
Google is suing "rogue pharmacies" who use their search engine ad system to scam searchers. Google explained: It’s been an ongoing, escalating cat-and-mouse game—as we and others build new safeguards and guidelines, rogue online pharmacies always try new tactics to get around those protections and illegally sell drugs on the web. In recent years, we have noticed a marked increase in the number of rogue pharmacies, as well an increasing sophistication in their methods. This - Minor Google Ranking Update (September 2010)?
There are a bunch of random threads in the Google Webmaster Help Forums as well as two WebmasterWorld discussion ranking changes. The ranking changes may be specific to a subset of sites or a larger but still not major ranking algorithm change. Some say the ranking changes are only in Google UK but others are saying it is specific site penalties. I'm in the UK and I've seen some of my sites drop too today, - Major Google Maps Business Listing (Places) Issues
There are many complaints in the Google Places Forums from business owners who aren't seeing their business listings in Google Maps appear correctly. Some are reporting duplicate listings, some are reporting missing listings, some are reporting their Google Places analytics going blank and so on. Mike covered many of the issues being reported late Wednesday but it appears some of the issues still are a problem. On Wednesday, Cecelia from Google said in a Google - Google Webmaster Tools Login Bug: Too Many Redirects
Some of you who tried to login to Google Webmaster Tools over the weekend may have been out of luck. There were many reports of login errors for the Webmaster Tools system. Those reports claimed Google was returning an error, "too many redirects." Google confirmed the bug and said: A small subset of users are seeing a "too many redirects" error when attempting to access Google Webmaster Tools. We are aware of this issue and - Google AdWords Now With Single Line Descriptions?
Rod Hull now spotted single line descriptions in the AdWords ads on the Google search results. You can replicate this by searching for [ebel 1911]. Here is a picture: Prior to that, he spotted AdWords ads that wrap, which is not something we had prior to Google Instant. I don't believe I ever saw one line descriptions or wrapping AdWords ads prior to Google Instant. Maybe it is a bug or maybe a feature? Forum
