I've been covering Google AMP like crazy here because Google keeps escalating the importance of it. But I also covered at least twice how it appears the click through rate on AMP results are drastically lower than normal results.
Now that Google separated out AMP for normal mobile search and AMP for rich results, I can see that AMP is not the issue but maybe the top stories carousel box?
Here is a chart from Google Search Console showing how CTR drops if the AMP results are in the rich results box (i.e. most likely the top stories section):

What do you see for your news sites with AMP? Do you see a huge decline in CTR in Google Search Console when you filter this way?
