Google Image Search Dropping Images From The Index?

I've been noticing some webmasters complaining Google has dropped many of their images out of the index. I have two recent threads, but there are many more I can reference, but here are the two.

One thread is a break-off at WebmasterWorld and the other is a thread at Google Webmaster Help - there are more, but those are just two examples.

The overall complaint is either Google is not showing their images anymore in the Google Image Search results and/or that the number of images indexed according to Google Search Console Sitemaps report has significantly dropped.

Here is one case:

My site map includes and Google WMT indicates 400 images submitted. A few weeks ago they had about half of those indexed, this week it's down to 26.

Here is another case:

My indexed images disappeared from google images in last two days

It can be a fluke of just more people complaining about Google Image search. I know it is slow to update but it is unusual to see people complain that often about indexing issues with Google Image Search.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld and Google Webmaster Help.
