Google's Gary Illyes said you really only need to invest in a link audit if you had some shady SEO done on your site in the past. He said otherwise, if you are just looking for better rankings, there is no need for a link audit to be done.
Here is the tweet of Gary saying this at PubCon:
Q: Should sites invest in link audits?
— Marie Haynes (@Marie_Haynes) October 10, 2019
A: "If you know you had a shady SEO company or you were buying links, it's probably best to do."
But not to just randomly do to try and get their sites ranking better.@methode @jenstar #Pubcon
I don't think anyone would be surprised that Gary or anyone from Google would say this. At least you should not be surprised by a statement like this.
