I think I've seen it all, covering search for over 13 years but every day, I learn a bit more. I spotted a conversation on Twitter where someone asked Google's John Mueller if they can use Google Sheets to build links. Basically, make a public Google Sheets page, post a ton of links on it and get Google to index the page.
Of course, John Mueller was like - why are you wasting your time with that? But seriously, where do people come up with these things?
John's response was "I don't know what to say." He then did a double take and asked "are you going to build links from spreadsheets?" "Don't do that, do something useful instead," he said.
@thebrightflow I don't know what to say. Are you going to build links from spreadsheets? Don't do that, do something useful instead.

These conversations make me sad.
