Google announced they have redesigned Google Maps and will be rolling it out to users over the upcoming weeks across "all Google products that incorporate Google Maps, including the Assistant, Search, Earth, and Android Auto."
Google said they updated the "driving, navigation, transit and explore maps to better highlight the information most relevant to each experience." They also updated the color scheme and added new icons to help identify exactly what kind of point of interest you are viewing.

It will take some time to get use to and people will 100% be complaining but I think people will get over it and enjoy it in the long run.
