Google Search is testing a "by the numbers" tag or label in the Google News / Top Stories "For Context" section. I guess Google adds this tag if it thinks the story has a "by the numbers" section in its content?
From what I understand, "by the numbers" is a style of journalism, or reporting, that shares numbers to help make up the stories. So with Google algorithm updates, a story might say, 1,000 sites dropped 5 ranking positions, and 500 sites saw 3 positon increases, resulting in 200 people losing their jobs and revenue drops of $1 billion dollars. Okay, I am making those numbers up but that is the style for "by the numbers."
