Just about a month ago, Google revamped their search filters and dropped some filters, while dynamically showing different filters and in different order based on the query. So sometimes the "images" link will be in the second position, while other times it might be the videos or shopping or maps. The top search tools change based on the query and for some users that is incredibly annoying.
Here are some examples, showing how if I search for [color flowers] the menu changes but should it?
Personally, I am use to the image option being in the second position and I have caught myself clicking on the second link and thinking it would take me to images but take me somewhere else. So I can relate.
There is a long complaint thread at Google Web Search Help with frustrated Google searchers. One said:
Google, the design choices you guys are making are absolutely insane. Stop messing with your established products. I've been using Google search since 1998.
A Google spokesperson told us back then:
We’re always making changes to Search to help you find the most useful things more easily. Now when you search, the type of results you can select at the top of the page will vary depending on what makes sense for your search. For example, if you search for “English to Tagalog” you’ll see ‘Apps’ that’ll help you with translation as well as ‘Books’ and ‘Shopping’ in case you’re looking to buy a printed or electronic dictionary.
I wonder if Google will switch back because honestly, it might be cool to change the order of the search filters based on query, it can be less efficient for many queries.
