Google: Differentiate Structured Markup Between Recorded & Live Stream Videos

Live Stream Google

Google's John Mueller said in a webmaster hangout yesterday that it is really important that when you use structured data for video content, you use the right markup based on it being either recorded video or live stream video.

He said this around the 12:04 mark into the video. He said "For structured data in general, I think you'd want to differentiate between streams and recorded content. That's one thing that would be really important to make that clear with regards to the structured data."

We know live stream video has special new structured data and supports the indexing API , which is one of two structured data types that support the indexing API. You can learn more about the live stream markup here.

John said, "But in any case you really want to differentiate the kind of recorded content from the live stream content and kind of treat them differently and make sure that the marked out separately in their own way."

The streaming side I think that's something I haven't looked into very much.

For structured data in general, I think you'd want to differentiate between streams and recorded content. That's one thing that would be really important to make that clear with regards to the structured data.

So that when when you're submitting videos recorded content that's available like anytime that's something where you can use a normal video markup for that. Or where you can also use the video sitemaps to tell us more about those videos.

For example if the video content is only available in certain countries you can tell us about that individual video sitemap.

For streams that's where I'm not really sure what what the right approach is there.

I believe there's also the indexing API that you might be able to use for for video for live stream content. I am not a hundred percent sure but you might want to double-check that.

But in any case you really want to differentiate the kind of recorded content from the live stream content and kind of treat them differently and make sure that the marked out separately in their own way.
