Just not long ago, we quoted Martin Splitt of Google saying he knows when Google will release an updated and more modern version of GoogleBot so it can render JavaScript and the modern web better but he won't say when. Now the folks at DeepCrawl caught Google testing Google running a more modern version of GoogleBot running versions of Chrome 69 or higher.
In fact, Martin Splitt from Google chimed in and kind of confirmed that Google is indeed testing this. He said on Twitter "Great post! We're testing things all the time and sometimes these experiments are visible. :)"
At @DeepCrawl we've been running tests to catch Google's updated WRS (using a vrs higher than Chrome 41) out in the wild since Google has talked about working on it.

Now, any test is a SMALL sample - but @KiwiAlec found some cool things to share.https://t.co/fa63JhurgJ

So it is awesome that Google is testing this but the reality is while they are trying to close the gap here, it still take take some time to do even though you are seeing tests.
You can learn more about the tests at the DeepCrawl blog.
