Google Trends now lets you filter your results by category, either with or without a query. This can give you a more refined view of the trends for a specific query or zoom you out more on category level trends within Google Search.
Google posted about this on LinkedIn and wrote:

Check it out https://goo.gle/4xEoYc2Pro Tip: Apply the category filter without entering a query to explore category-specific top-searched terms across specific categories, regions, and timeframes.
This means you can filter by category with out without a query. If you filter by category with a query, I assume the trend data will be more refined and targeted. Otherwise, it will be more general.

For example, if I want to see how Java is trending:
No, but I want Java coding for SEO topics, so I filter by search marketing and optimization:
