Today is the 81st birthday of Miriam Makeba.
Miriam Makeba is known for her work in the civil rights movement and being a Grammy Award-winning South African singer. She was also known as Mama Africa.
She was born today in 1932 and died at the age of 76 on November 9, 2008. Her death was unexpected, coming right after a concert in Italy organized to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organisation local to the region of Campania.
