Two Page NY Times Ad For Google Translate

I still find it awkward to see Google ads in traditional ad slots, even though it is fairly common these days. Here is a massive two-page spread ad in the New York Times for Google Translate.

I wonder why Google placed the ad? Was it because they feel bad for the print industry? Was it a favor for a friend there? Was it out of being bored?

Google Translates Josh Estelle posted the picture on Google+.
