This week in search I covered a possible Google search ranking update that touched down on September 4th or 5th. Before that we saw a spike in crawling activity from GoogleBot. I also posted the monthly Google Webmaster Report, so check that out. Google said it may show m-dot URLs in desktop search because of an unstable event in Google. Google also said GoogleBot Desktop will still crawl your site after being switched to mobile-first indexing. Google explained how it picks the canonical URL to show in search. Google Search Console added auto-DNS verification. Google updated its user interface for movie and TV search on mobile. Google published new structured data help documents on movie schema. Rand Fishkin posted his Google search ranking factors survey results. Google My Business dropped the distance based service areas and is showing profiles you can mange directly in search. Google local search in Google Maps dropped the pagination feature. Google is also showing competitors over local branded knowledge panels, not a good thing. Basecamp took out a funny ad calling Google’s tactics to make them buy an ad like ransom. Google is testing capitalizing URLs in the search results snippets.
