Dan Shures

Dan Shure (@dan_shure) founded a company named Evolving SEO, but before that, he was a music teacher, he has a degree in classical piano. When he was approaching 30 and had a home and wife, he had to find a job to pay the bills. He did some marketing for his family business and discovered that SEO can be done as a standalone thing. He got into SEO like a lot of others, by building sites for his clients and his clients wanting those sites to rank well.

But what you may not know is he was broke, so broke his heat was shut off when living in Maine. There are a number of SEOs who were actually homeless and worked out of a free internet cafe and grew their careers that way.

We talked about his podcast, Experts on the Wire Podcast. His podcast is very popular with over 4,000 to 5,000 downloads per episode. This is despite a lot of the criticism around podcasting in 2016.

We then got onto the topic of Google core ranking updates. He brought up an example, Examine.com as an example, a site that got hit in June but then seems to have bumped up after this interview in the September core update. He said core updates are not a site wide punitive mistakes for the traffic drop. Instead he thinks core updates are, the issue is the content is not structured in a way the user wants, the information architecture and the intent the user wants. It is less about EAT and more about site architecture for how a user expects to see it.

He then described how he approaches fixing Google core update issues. Specifically about how to create your site structure to satisfy users and Google. You can’t just throw EAT at a page that isn’t structured correctly, he said. A page that is designed to read easier, is easier for users and thus Google wants to rank it better.

He then describe how he approaches new clients, and he said it starts with the keywords. He talks about hybrid pieces of content that address the keywords they target. This is on top of all the other SEO topics, like technical SEO, accessibility, etc.
