Yahoo announced that they are closing down the Yahoo Directory. Yahoo was founded on the directory, it was what Yahoo was built on - it was the first real popular search engine (human edited).
Yahoo is shutting it down! But should they be allowed to do so?
Aren't there rules about closing down historic sites? Yahoo's Directory is a historic site, even though it is virtual. It should really never be shut down. The US government should take it over if Yahoo can't afford to keep it active. Yahoo is literally shutting down one of the most historic web sites on the internet.
Back in 2010 and earlier, Yahoo shut down the international directories but I never thought it would reach the main directory.
In my opinion, something needs to be done.
Here is our past coverage of the Yahoo Directory and Danny Sullivan has a wonderful write up of it on Search Engine Land.
